On a chicken-run of rough terrain,
jackets, granddad cardigans rigged up
on coat-hangers on a metal frame.
A woman throws the cochonnet.
An arthritic man picks up his boule
with a magnet on a string and hurls.
Another with a tremor
lobs with a backward flip and takes
his opponent’s out on the full volley.
Athletes of the third age
hiding their rage
under the paulownia trees.
Michael Henry studied Modern Languages. He lives in Cheltenham and has published five collections, four with Enitharmon Press, the latest, After the Dancing Dogs, came out in 2008.
