The Basque house
I want to live in the Basque house
that faces the ocean squat
and square, cream-painted with
plum-coloured shutters and woodwork,
a wooden walkway over the curved
stone sea wall onto the front.
I'll sit at my open window and eat
moules marinières, dip fistfuls
of country bread into the sweet
soup and feel like a king
drinking my pink wine.
The smell of the sea will come into
my bedroom all ozony, with the
faintest stench of new catch,
intoxicating and perfumy.
Maybe one night a man will arrive but
I don't see his face yet, and I don't
know if he'll be a sailor or farmer
or shop-keeper, but under the thin
coverlet none of that will matter,
only the swell of the out-of-season
sea and the bang of the town on
my front door, and the roll
of the mountains nearly at Spain.
