Cornflower
You come upon me in a field.
I am sky looking up to sky
so you wonder where your opposites
have gone. You pitch between sleep
and waking, tell the dream
it is not. But I am what you know,
remember? The colour of every best shirt,
your valiant ink finger, your sunkin-
the-glass memory. I survive.
The sun may burn me out
to wide blue, lost blue, to blue faded through
to white at the edges.
But there is blue in the evening
burning softly in the gloom,
in an ordinary kitchen where I leave no scent.
I stand easy in the jug.
I am there in your hands.
No need to proclaim me – I am no noisy
orange flower in a hood of cellophane.
I speak your language, leave sap
on your fingers, across your sheet of paper.
Look at my gathering of petals –
how could they be closer?
My sooty black heart –
how could it not say what it feels?
