Poppies are amazing in their strength
Just think of their flaming ghost emergence
Across the western battle fields, springing
From their deep buried darkly secret seed.
Then picked to pin on every lapel,
Hope memory star of 1919.
How they market themselves. Schizophrenics:
Their Ladybird hearts cradling magical
Kindly healing, fuzzy muzzy madness,
And a teenager dying in prison.
They adorn posh National Trust tea towels
With their right wing, left wing colouring,
Getting themselves scattered on newly
Baked bread - another clever move.
Whatever the event sure they'll be there
Like bankers in war time, milking rewards
I should hate their grim cynical hardness
But their fragile blush wins me every time.
