Wake
She takes the cutlery from the drawer
two spoons bowl to bowl
the knives from separate slots, each blade
is in its own felted bed,
an armoury laid head to toe.
He carries in the lychees,
the crusty aniseed bread and oozing camembert,
dresses the plump tomatoes with garlic,
walnut oil and basil.
She disembowels the calamari, tears out
their see-through bones, black beaks,
and slices crudités. He scrapes
the mussels bare, clunks the dead ones
in the bin, adds wine, stirs in the cream.
Two red candles, the frying pan between them,
a bottle of Montrachet:
they share their grief.
She wakes in the night,
his body spoon hot at her back.
