Trish O'Brien
Visitors
Around this time of year, she
will expect his company, though
he always tended to show
when far from her mind.
She could be lost in a
favourite film, but before long
his presence, quiet yet strong
would permeate the room.
And now she can almost see
him sitting there
in that chair
slender fingers drumming wood.
The same beautiful hands clenched
a steel-cold rifle so tight
his knuckles showed white
the day he went to war:
his departing words emphasised by
banging the butt on the floor.
‘If you’re EVER unfaithful to me
I’ll kill the pair of you’.
It was all she could do
to keep a straight face.
