HANS DIETER SCHÄFER was born in 1931 in Berlin, escaped from East Germany in 1953 and is now teaching at the University of Münster in West Germany. He has published two volumes of poetry and some literary criticism. A volume of his poems in English translation by Ewald Osers will shortly be published by the Carcanet Press, Oxford.

HANS-JÜRGEN HEISE, born in 1930 in Bublitz (now in Poland), lived in East Germany from 1945 to 1950 when he escaped to West Berlin. He now lives in Kiel, West Germany. He has published seven volumes of poetry (another is due out shortly), edited several anthologies and has translated poetry by Archibald MacLeish and T. S. Eliot. A bilingual volume of his poetry (English translations by Ewald Osers) was published by the Oleander Press (Wisconsin and Harrow) this autumn.

ANNEMARIE ZORNACK, born 1932 in Germany, now lives in Kiel. She is married to Hans-Jürgen Heise and has published two volumes of poetry.

HORST BIENEK, was born in 1930 in Gleiwitz, Upper Silesia. In 1951 he was arrested in East Berlin and condemned to twenty-five years of forced labour. After four years in the Stalinist camp at Vorkuta he was amnestied and came to West Germany where he edited the literary magazine, blätter + bilder. He is the author of a collection of poems, was war was ist, a collection of interviews, Werkstättgespräche mit Schriftstellern and a novel, Die Zelle. One of his stories appeared in OASIS 4, 1970.

ALFRED ANDERSCH, born Munich in 1914, was a founder member along with Heinrich Böll of the now famous Gruppe 47. As well as a poet, he is an essayist, has written radio plays and arranged a regular evening programme for Radio Frankfurt. His best known works are novels and short stories, among them Sansibar (1957), Die Rote (1960), Fin Liebhaber des Halbschattens (1963). His latest work is the novel Efraim (1967), just published in this country.

The poems by Schäfer, Heise and Zornack have been translated by Ewald Osers, those by Bienek and Andersch by Michael Bullock.
