Outpatient
I inhabit a world where they call you my love
and make you wait for hours in queues
on different coloured plastic chairs.
A world that has a medicinal smell:
disinfectant, stale urine, damp winceyette
and a taste of fear, boiled over milk
and cabbage. When you touch it it shrinks
and recedes down an echoing corridor
with a rattling trolley of bottles,
large-print library books, last week's magazines
and memories of something beautiful
but out of reach that happened yesterday
or was it last week or maybe to someone else.
