READ Spring and Fall by Gerard Manley Hopkins.
There are two words in the poem which Hopkins
has 'invented' Unleaving and Wanwood. Do you
feel that they are successful in that they are
essential to the success of the poem ?
Many poets make use of words which they have
created for a specific purpose. It may be argued
that any word which cannot be readily understood
is a hinderance rather than an asset. Would this
mean that such poems are bad ?
COMPARE this poem with the poem Inversnaid immediately
following it in the Penguin "Gerard Manley Hopkins'.
The SENSE of Inversnaid is very much more accessible.
Is it a better poem?
TRUE OR FALSE ?
1. In 'Spring and Fall' Hopkins could have said the same thing
more concisely.
2. It is better to be concise than self-indulgent.
3. Spring and Fall is successful because it integrates
Hopkins' self indulgence and contains it.
4. Spring and Fall is a religious poem.
What is the difference between the functions of 'unleaving' and
'wanwood' in the poem ?
How many poets since Hopkins show a clear debt to him ?
