The Year of the Crab
Morning Shift
After the gaunt night, its taut sheet
of silence torn from time to time
by sudden cries and the urgent morse
of hurrying feet, the hushed confabulations,
darkness clinging still to outer panes
behind the brooding curtains,
comes the time of neither night nor sunrise,
a brief, noiseless lacuna of exhaustion,
before the morning shift arrives,
not seen as yet, but audible,
an awakening of starlings and sparrows,
laughter, voices, the cold scent of dew and dawn,
a distant whisper of wind in shivering leaves,
a rumour of drenched petals unfolding:
morning puts on its fresh starched uniform.
