Today
(for Irina Ratushinskaya)
Today is the day, November seventh, prisoners
in the KGB prison were tortured in a
cell as cold as a fridge
so Irina said.
Today I wear a poppy as a red redress
for all the poets killed in war
for all those who were tortured
or died or lived to tell.
Today, Irina said, was a
very special day when prisoners
spent every second, every minute
waiting for the festive guards to hit.
Today I will pass Tolpuddle
from where the martyrs were transported
as far away as possible
for daring to plead for workers’ rights.
Today in The Big Issue
a vendor’s advice was don’t sleep
in doorways at night
as you get pissed on.
Today technology is about to take over
for already it is possible
to be digitally deleted from the picture.
