Apparition in blazing June
Wearing a platform-soiled shalwar kameez
under a distinctive dirt-red jacket,
coolie, armband no. 101,
is first precariously uncertain but soon
settles to the task with experienced ease -
climbing the stairs of Tottenham Court tube
while balancing two fat suitcases on his head;
forearms I hands a clamp grip, the load levelled
on a ragged scarf turned makeshift turban.
Each step footed blind as both eyes are checked
like sluggish brown bubbles in a spirit level.
And once freed from the most demanding act,
but without a tightrope walkers applause, deep breath,
he stealthily paces barefoot down Charing Cross Rd
winding his way through the lunchtime stampede;
almost comfortable with his new found momentum.
While in hot pursuit is the ever alert and anxious
cool-cotton suit and cigarette geared sahib.
