was driven mad
by tinnitus,
it’s non-stop tuneless
whistle and hiss
drowning his music.
Evelyn Glenny
feels the vibrations
of two hundred plus,
percussion instruments,
“hears” through the soles of her naked feet.
The first time
I wore my pink plastic aid
home on the bus
I was pop eyed with shock.
Armageddon.
Sirens. Traffic. Mobile phones.
Back home
The meditative calm
of the once peaceful kitchen, shattered
as armoured knights battle
through crashing waterfalls.
At least I have the luxury of choice,
switch the thing off,
revert to low level muttering.
I realise I have always been
deaf to certain things,
criticism comes through loud and clear –
but nice things
get brushed off like buzzing flies,
the legacy of my no-nonsense northern gran,
adamant,
you’ll spoil that child.
So, sorry
if I ask you to repeat
I didn’t quite catch –
did you say
you think you might
possibly
love me?
