Of course the women would contort and cry,
be eight months pregnant, open their palms,
the eldest daughter cover breasts and groin,
the baby scratch his mother's naked neck,
the intense toddler sit on the ground
and cast three stones, quite unconcerned,
the ruin on the hilltop keep exploding,
smeared excreta scar the empty valley,
the sky retreat to swabs of bandaged grey.
Our sergeant stabs his sword at parcelled air
as he gives the order. We're soldiers.
We wear our balls like well-stocked armouries,
our rivets like scabs, ribs like weals,
our eyes like long-dead plums,
except one unguarded eye, my left eye,
which has been allowed iris white,
(you'll barely tell from the postcard),
where love has fixed a single tear.
