Quality Time
My Dad takes me on the bus:
today we’re going to the zoo.
He laughs when I pull funny faces
not like Mum who says they’re silly.
Then he starts to ask me lots
of questions about school and things
that happened weeks ago. How many
different teachers have we had
for maths this term? And was it just
the Mayor of Hackney or the proper
Mayor of London at assembly?
Going home, we have a game
of Guess the teacher’s nickname. He tries
Pat O’Cake and Micky Finn:
and then I think about this evening
when the airport taxi stops
outside our house to take him back
to Belfast. He’ll be waving to me
and I’ll see that now it’s him
who’s making little funny faces.
