Beau Brummell
who, in his madness,
arranged the furniture
in his cheap lodgings
to look like that
of some scene of his
former triumphs,
and announced the entry
of the imaginary guests
until, at last, he
reached his own name,
and collapsed, crying,
in despair.
The gesture was empty
without the others
to reflect its impact,
the defiance nothing
in the shattered mirror
of his memories.
He had perfected himself,
it was his only arts
and as his mind gave way
the glass ran out.
