Hospital Visitor
In the year of Watergate
when a plane in the Northern Hemisphere at night
was seen to cross Orion
they told her it would have to be an operation
and tomorrow, not the day after
or the day after that. She looked out
through the large plate glass window, moisture
like seeds patterning its edges,
at the bottom of the stairs from the first floor ward
watching him as he left.
A great sea-swell coming in to the coast, a glacier
receding leaving behind lakes and mountains,
she watched him walk past Paediatrics and X-ray,
the sign for Radiology, hospital buildings
darkening against the ultramarine of the sky,
thinking all sorts of things, but primarily
that she could see him, see him as he turned round
and waved then went out the gate towards the bus stop,
his green jacket brushing against a wall,
as with both hands she leaned on the glass of the window
and looked out on an evening moving to night.
