Helen Kitson
The Gifthorse
He's after the free ride -
the chauffeur,
the beautiful bride -
so young -
mother to his children.
She brings along her stray girl -
a frizz of hair like her father's.
Mother wants more -
plays fast & loose
with an Access card,
fills a room
with nursery nonsense.
But there's something wrong
with the baby -
it won't grow,
it withers & dies,
the kernel of life gone.
He murmurs soft words
about trying again.
She takes her daughter
for long walks in the park,
they throw dry bread
at the ducks.
The grass is frosted,
their breath comes out
in white puffs.
Her wedding ring is too tight.
Like ice, it hurts.
