Because I have acquired the rarity value
that comes with a long history;
because I am corrugated,
with a fine grey patina
the Society for the Conservation
Of Rundown English Women (SCREW)
is attempting to have me listed.
They consider my mossy overhang,
my bulging sides,
to be ripe for preservation.
They admire the sturdy way
I have endured so many storms.
They fear that somebody else
with doubtful taste
will turn up, take me over,
insist on radical dentistry,
Brazilian waxing, nip and tuck.
Atkins. Botox. Even a boob job.
And all the charm of a certain antique style
of woman would be lost.
Now I have been offered
to the National Trust.
Sightseers crowd my door,
curious to see what happens when
a woman simply grows old.
