The Jester’s Legs
In a field across the valley
the furrows narrow and widen, fold
into each other and vanish – parti-
coloured stripes of green and tan,
earth and crop: the plain and purl
of a jester’s fully-fashioned
knitted stockings. And above it,
a row of poplars rustles, shimmers
pales and darkens against the skyline
as every leaf is turned by the wind:
the rapt gaze of an audience
mystified yet captivated
by the chorus-girlish movement
of the jester’s prancing legs.
And then,
as if an army of hungry
invaders, arrive the harvesters.
