Places Where I Thought Of You And Lost All Sense Of Time
On the verge of a wide valley,
beside me a basket of windfall apples.
The sound of a distant skateboard
insisting on itself over churchbells
and the bleating of sheep.
Surprised in a graveyard
by a stone boy in rumpled clothes and cap.
He sits on one foot, reading;
there are no words on the page.
On a bridge below the cathedral, knowing
there is a bronze sanctuary ring on the door
high above me. The ring is set
in a lion’s head, green with the ages,
designed to frighten sheriffs.
Driving through orange groves grafted
for commerce, the entire cycle
in each tree:
one branch flowering
one with green fruit
one heavy with oranges
ready to pick.
