From Vindolanda
An unforgiving land, this,
where wind cuffs rock to roundness,
then splinters it.
Sheep lick moss from stone,
nudge and huddle
for comfort from bleakness.
In a swoop of breath I snatch
isolated glimpses of the thin skein of wall
rising, falling, clumping into turrets.
A fort solidifies.
My face is sliced by chill
into abbreviated laughter.
Lost lives drift along this broken baffler,
a first cadging from the hard uplands.
These invasive people are closer than centuries.
The shoes leave me listening for footfalls,
the voices in the letters catch at me.
“The men have no beer...”
“Please send me twenty chickens...”
“You have written nothing back to me
for such a long time...”
I begin the march back.
