Lunar Moths by Jo Haslam.
Smith/Doorstop Books, The Poetry Business, the Studio, Bryam Arcade, Westgate, Huddersfield HD1 1ND £3.00.
Loving detail, beautifully achieved, is the main quality in Jo Haslam's Lunar Moths. There are five poems on the subject of moths - all very different. Lunar Moths! celebrates their beauty, '...the last completely black / with silky pleated wings. The moths / this summer are all shapes and sizes - / we examine one that's flat against the wall, / not sure if it's real. It's some tertiary colour, / a mix of silver pink and cream...' She reflects on moths on polar ice caps and brings in some wonderful names, 'Ermine, Lunar Thorn, / noctuids, loopers, the black one you set free / is Chimney Sweeper...' In Lunar Moths 5, we hear of Dark Sword Grass, Clouded Buff, Rosy Footman, Winged Muslin, Dusky Clearwing, Mother of Pearl. All the poems, which are about nature or relationships with nature, have fine music, sure imagery and acute detail. Our Neighbour '...gets up early...He cracks the ice / on a bowl put out for the hens last night / feels his knuckles stick / before he frees the water underneath...'
