This bright weather forgets
those days when women
wore black and neighbours
bent over you bearing
down on the smell
of their drab dresses;
the weather forgets
the night’s excuses,
the sound of blame
and the silences between
families at Christmas.
Taught to record it all
on a Japanese camera
bought no more than
a year ago, using
the weather to recover
girls singing, Sunday clothes
and multi-coloured cats,
we discover that nothing
happened then, that
we are not here today
and that the chemist may
return all 36 exposures
blank in a black bag
with a bill to pay.
