A Bit of Sewing
A nurse asked, Do you sew? I said I did.
She said, Perhaps I shouldn't ask, but would you mind?
I said, No, I wouldn't mind.
I was one of the waiting mothers. In another ward
A woman had been unblessed,
Her child still-born.
The lint lay on my knees.
Under the bed-covers I felt
A comforting movement.
I made a dress and bonnet from the cloth
They used for wounds. New, white, but graceless.
Pure, and plain.
I had no ribbon for the tiny neck, no lace
To enclose a doll-like face. I made the sleeves
Wide for the ease of dressing, gathered
To wrists that had no pulse.
In the dawn that followed
My own time came, and soon
My baby cried.
