except the sea, the sand, the barren
turning-circle of Sandwich Tern.
A sea-front parade of hotel-dragons
with eyelash balconies of bleak ferns
welcomes the rock-legend’s vague
arrival. She straightens her denim,
signs a few autographs on the jetty.
Deaf-tired from the amplified whims
of Glastonbury’s once-and-futile-city
she leans to The Channel and hums
Nazarene-soft, a song of pity.
Later, on the pier, her pounding
form, absorbed in soundless limbo, waits,
noticed only by me. And a gull, rounding
the cliff, ticks one more bay en route
from Dumpton, Louisa, Viking,
to Stone, Joss, Kingsgate.

Dicken’s darling cosseted hamlet
braced by sharp malted mussels for tea
