Editorial
November is approaching, with its memories of the two great wars of this century, and it seems a good time to publish work by two German poets who died in 1914-18. Under a different hat, I edit the newsletter of the Wilfred Owen Association, which is organising a festival, Eighty Years On, in the week leading up to Remembrance Sunday; details are on page 20. In the longer term, possibly for the millennium, the Association hopes to bring out an anthology of poems about Owen, the Great War and war in general. If you would like your poems to be considered, please send them to me stating whether or not they have been published and including the usual s.a.e. You are free to send them elsewhere unless I take them for The Interpreter’s House.
1998 is also the hundredth birthday of Federico Garcia Lorca, one of the greatest poets of the century and a civilian victim of war. I am happy to publish free translations by two contemporary poets of one of his little-known Sonnets of Dark Love.
Finally, and on top of the usual mixture (the best prose and verse that I can get!), we bring you the winners of the 1998 Bedford Open Poetry Competition, which produced a large and fascinating crop of work this year.
