Reckless Sleeper
(After the Reckless Sleeper by Magritte)
A man has lost his hat;
in sleep he finds an apple that
reminds him of a red bow that
his sister used to wear in her hair.
Then he sees his mother
holding out her hand,
but as he goes to take it
it becomes a mirror.
A bird flies past the window.
Curtains are drawn and candles lit.
It must be night,
or someone has died. He can’t see much.
His bed
has been made already.
He closes his eyes
in sleep he finds an apple that
reminds him of a red bow that
his sister used to wear in her hair.
Then he sees his mother
holding out her hand,
but as he goes to take it
it becomes a mirror.
A bird flies past the window.
Curtains are drawn and candles lit.
It must be night,
or someone has died. He can’t see much.
His bed
has been made already.
He closes his eyes
