A Perfect Night in Edinburgh
You set the board up
while I make
the tea, choreographed
intricately, not touching,
but intimate:
you stir,
but I pour.
You plump the cushions,
move the standard lamp,
while I test biros
and search the contents
of the hearth,
looking for scrap
paper to keep score.
We select letters,
2 ‘A’s, smile for the first
time tonight.
And then fireworks
boom through the tenement
courtyards, their ripples
ending in the kitchen utensils.
Somewhere outside
The Festival has begun.
