Taking Luke Home from Nursery
‘Look at the flowers,’ I say
and he gazes, eyes half-closed,
drifting off to sleep, his push-chair
jammed in the back of the taxi.
What does he make of these posies
strung low-level, gold and magenta,
down the centre of Islington High Street?
‘Three cranes,’ he says
and I turn to look at their fragile beaks
high up in the watery sky behind us,
marvelling at his knowledge of machines,
his skill with numbers
and how deftly
he can turn a conversation around.
