Six women, eight men. Asked, I’d have guessed the majority of my acceptances would have been of poems by women. I wonder why. Is there a difference? Can you tell a poet’s gender from their writing? I hope not.
Geraldine Green’s a poet to watch – we’re doing her collection in December: Suzanne Batty is off-the-wall in a different way & is promised a Flarestack pamphlet in 2003. Both Geraldine & Suzanne are poets whose work is most effective in large doses – Geraldine creeps up on you, and to get into the ways of Suzanne’s special world takes time.
I enjoy the subtlety of many of the poems in this issue – hard on the heels of the “Summer” number 18, as promised, and I apologise to those readers upset by our irregularity – and the perceptive nonchalance of others, and found them hard to arrange.
A Harry Potterish lot, even more reluctant to stay put & settle down where I put them than OWPs usually are, these poems kept calling to each other across the dorm, discovering new interests to share, new friends they wanted to be next to.
Enjoy spending time among them, listening to their conversations.
