Lemons in Umbria
Stop at the side of the road to pick them up, spoil of the laden tree from its wealth of life - surging energy. For its sharp slap in your drinks, or mixed with honey to soothe your tired throat. Supreme among citrus, strong in segments and drop-shaped flesh. Their skins are firm and shining, uneven surfaces bonded by primary colour; they offer themselves to the knife or the squeezer, shedding pure blood for drinking or married to their affinity, water. They will agree to a sweetener for the hesitant, the unwilling. Theirs, after all, is a life of great, of violent change. The petalled emergence, as coquettes in the breeze, their disintegration, and then, second forming into fruition. Finally the fall. Never losing grace, their afterlife is an essence or a compost in many places. The roadside is a rich supply for laying by.
