This choice was prompted by George Marsh’s splendidly trenchant manifesto for what I call the Existentialist School of Haiku (BS10/l March 2000 pp 51-55). This is about haiku as a means of enduring and even transcending the pain of being human. It is about writing haiku to live rather than living to write haiku. For me Cobb’s haiku affirms the mysterious present which is the stuff of time and our mortality. But how pretentious even to say so!
