Fugitive
Greypatch sky, gloomtree wood
menaced and boxed him in.
Outside, they were searching.
Her body, found that morning,
grew in his mind till it became
every death-plant, belladonna,
every subtle flowering thing
that poisoned; till it became
a forest in which were gathered
all the world’s widowed.
She brought to earth, with her last cry,
the light of crossbeamed stars,
which stretched and spread to cover
as far back as first killer
and primal enemy.
It seemed to him, in his despair,
all betrayers and slayers were he.
And they found him, limp as Judas,
hanging from the tree.
