Wintering
Fields are stippled green with winter wheat
before all leaves have fallen. Taller, leaner,
trees begin to stir, bare their limbs,
shake off summer stupor, dare the wind.
Ploughshares burrow, turn earth-tendons, ridge
and furrow ripple, hills flex bulging muscles,
morning missel-thrushes glut on berries,
fatten bellies. Valleys stretch and yawn.
Pitching off worn patchwork thatch,
the land stands out against cold blue.
Frost is due, an icy sickle,
water honed to shatter stone.
Soil will glitter, crust and shutter;
fields shield winter wheat, part-grown.
