The Cupboard
At the bottom of the stairs
I opened the old man’s cupboard
and scavenged through the mouldy books,
clutching to those of interest
like flowers from a dungheap.
And out of the musty covers
fell
photographs
letters
cards
the fading images of a lifetime
To my beloved, on your birthday.
May the fourth, 1896.
not that I could have ever done it
not that
My Dear Sir,
I would be grateful if
her
the 14th instant
by the river
meeting her at eight
fumbling with careless interest
through that torn corpse of writing
and slowly
becoming aware of this other
this man
who was not I
and I picking the bones of his living
having, finally, to close the door on this place
where I had no right
was not called.
