I cannot hear the sound of his
Concern, dust caving in again
Inaudibly. To go on in
To blackness like crabs down a pipe
Into silence near the sea-shore
In the evening in the roaring
Is the programme. I remember
Driving somewhere. Radio spoke
Of lost airmen found lost long ago
In silt frail off Felixstowe.
I walk again in evening air
Beyond the works, the black pollen
Of night on everything, and know
Not much, not nothing, smoky words
Enlisting my assent as if
An old procession demonstrates
On outskirts of reality
Against a government long gone;
Or watch at the horizon
Arrivals of clouds like immense
Fragile barges at the lock-gates
Of evening, the dance of the rain
In its locus of late light
Receding, like the long days
Winding back into the spiral,
Into the spool; the burden-freighted
Chestnut-trees adrift in the light.
