Still Life with Pots
Pots stacked four-square
on the bare earth floor,
raw sides drying in the air.
If you squint they almost disappear,
only the shadows on their left sides
show how they might be here.
Shadows like the caves in cliffs,
spaces where a man could go to hide.
The man who made these pots has disappeared.
There is no water here.
If he were hiding – if he had slipped
sideways into the shadows
at the left side of the pots,
he should have taken one pot with him
to fetch water in. Perhaps
if you listen carefully you might hear
running water, two hands slipping
under the surface like a cup,
water dripping through a leaky bowl,
someone sipping water,
water being swallowed into shadows.
