Garden: Remembrance Day
Touting catkin crutches
like an early Dali
the birch wags
its village of tongues
against a slicing breeze.
Rocketed through
warped raspberry canes
a robin pops up
like a missed apple -
fresh from the Hesperides
while the cherry that hung fire
on a promise of next -year styles
- somehting in greeen, no doubt -
has at last dumped
those old red shoes
the greenhouse preens
past as a proof in Pythagoras
- glassily enthralled
with the cut
of its hypoteneuse.
and the treehouse rope
is poised; as if to ring
the used year out.
But the rambler still
has a quiffed bud or two
and flowers that unlike the poppy’s
do not buttonhole with lies
the Somme of those whose last hours
were marking time
in a cenotaph queue.
