On Whitsunday afternoon all the churches
Gathered at the Cross. Up Tannery Street
We followed the Salvation Army Band.
Like the serpent of old temporarily tamed,
Down chapel street we crept
Past the pear trees and finally coiled
Inside the Croft at the front of the church.
Walter Whittaker - the rest of the year
You’d find him in his joiner’s yard
Kept us together with Bread of Heaven
And the Prize Band at the tail end,
Or charmed us with Love Divine.
His foot firmly on the serpent s neck,
He announced the numbers to sing.
Only the hymn sheets breathed reply
From the waiting crowds outside the walls
Where the lilac and red may were on fire.
