The dawn broke cold and clear,
it showed him in the gutter where he lay
with party streamers in his hair
and one foot bare. "For one so pissed
he doesn't look that badly dressed..."
a woman at her window mused
fitting slippers to her feet,
and "Someone's had a rare old night..."
said Dan to Syd up on the dustcart,
and "Men..." said Meg to Maudie, "Men..."
as they walked together into town
with twenty offices to clean,
but "six hours or so..." the doctor said
lifting the shoulders so he could
arrange the coat around the head.
