The marble squirrel
Clutching an acorn
Eventually will drop it.
The young fog will grow old.
And I, the only one alive
In Allegheny cemetery this morning,
Will get lost among the wet trees.
Who will show me the way
Between these low houses and tall crosses?
A leaf falls from the maple and disappears.
Up the lane crawls a polished Chevrolet.
Behind the wheel – gloves, glasses and a black hat.
Alice. Jennifer. Scott Macintosh.
Moss blooms in the chiseled names.
The cigarette singes my fingers.
I smother it with my heel.
A breeze. The lake’s skin suddenly bristles.
