Kraków Christmas (before Spielherg)
The trumpeter's sweet arrow
shrills through the frozen air, each
hour on the hour, to be shot
himself in turn, mid-note, the
icicle of death piercing
his warning repeatedly.
In monochrome five nuns glide
towards the tram stop, heads bowed,
waterfowl against the storm.
The driving snow slices through
their habits as they wait, still,
heads bowed as in prayer, cursing
prevailing winds from the east.
The only indicator
a wrought-iron fence, menorah
form repeated endlessly,
black against coal-crusted snow,
a street echoes ceaselessly
with mute cries of the hunted.
And everywhere amber: hot
gold honey trapping idle
dreams, framing them in silver,
seeds, flies, preserved in resin,
prehistoric candlelight
warming the eyes of freezing
strangers, pacing the market.
