Magma showcase: John McCullough
Magma makes a point of supporting new and up-and-coming poets as well as more established ones. Our Showcase gives more space than is usually possible to a poet whose work we feel should be more widely known. For this Showcase, we have chosen John McCullough. John grew up in Watford and like his partner Morgan Case now lives in Brighton. He is researching the homoerotics of Renaissance friendship for a D.Phil thesis at Sussex University where he also teaches. In 2002, he won first prize in the university’s Robin Lee Memorial Poetry Competition.
His poems have appeared in anthologies such as Reactions and the University of East Anglia’s <text> series and in magazines including Touch and the latest edition of The Rialto. He lists Elizabeth Bishop, Frank O’Hara and Wallace Stevens amongst his favourite poets.
