The Gentle Art Of Demolition
Shadow braces himself
in the steel doorframe
and revs the stihlsaw.
The blade slowly slices
into the jamb opposite
filling
the windowless brick vault
with a waterfall
of golden sparks
pervading it with a light
soft as candles.
In the next room
a JCB
has lowered its bucket
in through the empty window
to be filled with
lumps of concrete floor
delicate
as a hand
extending a cup
for sugar.
Two more diggers outside
one with a bucket
one with a jackhammer
pass each other
sideboardsized
lumps of concrete
to be broken like biscuits.
Going home
the lorry coming the other way
doesn’t
take Beefy’s head off
as he leans out of the window
for a blast of fresh air
