Kingley Vale
At the view
half-caught phrases
splinter the air:
at the end of the day,
how things should be,
what would be best
for Susanne.
They do not hear
the woods’ voice.
I head off on only a hunch
of direction,
snap dead sticks,
chase the pheasant up
into a terrifying squawk.
I find thick patches of violets
and the muntjacs,
the forest’s gift.
Barely an arm-stretch away.
They cross in front of me,
whisk off in a flash of white tail.
This is man’s playground
but I have heard something
further back. Still.
