Allan Burgis
Not a man to court fashion
I doubt if my father’s shirts
ever cost more than twenty five bob.
He never rolled the sleeves down.
He had simple tastes: each shirt he bought
was a replica of the one before.
He wore unsophisticated, shadow-check suits,
and in the top pockets
— never graced by a pocket handkerchief —
he maintained a row
of pens and pencils and screwdrivers
instead.
He was not, then, a man to court fashion,
nor to have any truck with elegance.
Odd then to reflect
that the undertaker had dressed him
in what my sister described as
‘a lovely silk shirt
with lace down the front.’
