The Influence of Latitude
We, who near the globe’s top circle,
our Novembers, our Decembers
float like pale dreams in black pools.
Rise and set of day is told, mainly,
by gradual change from dark to less dark,
then to darker grey.
The cold is ever foe;
fire the miracle;
with evergreens we keep our holiday and venerate the sun.
I and my fathers all before me, none
has known other than north.
Therefore the sunlight in our dreams is brief,
our poems forested with shadows.
