She sipped her acidic Pino Grigio,
looking into his eyes across the table
and joined in with the juke-box song
from 1965 that she knew he hated.
As her boot tapped on the hectic carpet
she planned how she would lick him into shape
later, like a long, cream-filled éclair.
He watched her singing the awful words,
downed his golden pint by the log-effect fire,
on the stool beneath the crooked hunting print
and, leaning forward to flick his lighter,
talked, by the flare in her eyes, of nothingness
and wondered how Sartre in the Café Flore
dragged his eyes from de Beauvoir’s cleavage.
