Baby Lost (text)
There’s Baby out there, lying in the road,
He’s left three strands of auburn curling on the curb.
‘Baby, what are you doing out there?’ I yell.
And Baby moans a reply of ‘Looking for Hydra.’
A bustling crowd is starting to gather around:
Rosy cheeked Grocery Girls dropping their pomegranates;
Greasy haired Salon Sweepers raising their brooms;
Checked shirt Library Children dancing in fits of amusement;
Bakers’ Sons, bare chested, breathing in the doughy air
Of a scene of Baby, brave in the road, bellowing out for Hydra.
Baby's rolled onto his back to count the clouds
And Hydra's arrived, heads for everyone.
'Baby, what do you want from me?' Hydra is puzzled.
'Give me one of your limber necks and a head of yours,
So I can see both these clouds and above this fevered crowd for Mother.'
